Bri Specht, sophomore at the University of Wyoming, is attending a horsemanship class every Sunday for the next six weeks through the University’s outdoor program. Specht has always been a rider due to her family having horses of their own, but wanted to have some way of riding while she was away at college studying kinesiology. This portrait was taken during her first day of the class with her lesson horse Five owned by the Sodergreen Ranch in Wyoming.

Saturday February 22 the University of Wyoming was part of the Jury Gallery showing located in the Art Museum on campus. Art students from multiple departments, photography to ceramics to print media, submitted their work to be chosen and placed in this gallery showing. Many individuals came to show their support and interest in the students’ art work, and to enjoy the great hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.

The Union on campus of the University of Wyoming contains a universal store called CJ’s with snacks, drinks and over the counter medications for students. It is in a prime location for students to grab necessities on the go, however, the pricing may be overpriced for college students.

Colin and girlfriend take on the slopes at Snowy Range in Wyoming to practice snowboarding, something they have not done in years. Though they fell many times on the jumps they enjoyed the fresh air and funny memories they now get to share. The aftermath of the slopes is a sore body, though, and a long nights rest.

Three amazing ladies, Tori, Holly and Jenna, randomly invited me to watch Bachelor night and have pancakes! The spontaneous and generous invitation from these three ladies, after a short conversation on campus about the Bachelor Peter and the common frustration amongst Bachelor Nation, spurred to a fun night.
For my feature photo, titled Art is a Confusing Topic, I attended the Jury Gallery showing at the Art Museum on the campus of the University of Wyoming on Saturday February 22 to view UW students’ art work varying from photography to print projects. I was interested in going to this event due to my photography minor I am working on through the art department on campus. I was accompanied by a friend and brought my camera to submit an image for this assignment. Many individuals, both student and faculty individuals as well as family and friends of such, came to this event providing me with many photojournalist opportunities. Through taking pictures at this event I found that with large art pieces I wanted a wide image of it and wanted to include individuals viewing and discussing the piece. I found that it gave a full story of what is happening in the image. Creative devices that I used in this image are balancing elements and establishing size. The balancing element is shown through the location of the art piece and the group of individuals in the image on either side of the framing. The size is being established through the group of individuals showing the vast size of the piece on the wall.
For my sports feature photo, titled We’re Smiling but We Don’t Like Heights, I went snowboarding for the first time at Snowy Range and found a couple in front of me who were willing for me to photograph. Through yelling across the vast expanse, I heard the first name of the gentleman, Colin, and that he was with his girlfriend. I heard it was their first time in years snowboarding themselves and, from the looks of it, they fell often but were having a very enjoyable time. This photo was only taken on an iPhone and, therefor, it is not very clear or a close up of the individuals. Furthermore, due to me only having my cell phone in the atmosphere, I could not get action shots very well from the distances I had to stand from the moving individual. The creative device used in this image is leading lines as shown by the green poles in the left of the image leading the viewers eyes to the centered seat of the two individuals.
For my general news photo, titled CJ’s May be Overpriced?!, I had stumbled upon a conversation that friends were having of how a pack of M&M’s cost her five dollars, which she labeled as an absurd amount for the school to assign as the cost for college students. I was then curious of the pricing and saw one of the workers stocking the shelves and observing the prices himself. Since I had heard of complaints concerning CJ’s, I found this to be an ideal image to add the reasoning to the caption with the image. Overall it was easy to take this shot on my iPhone using the rule of thirds to make it an appealing image for viewers. I also took it wide so the viewers could tell it was in a convenience store of such.
This assignment, I believe, was pretty straight forward of what the images should contain. It was pretty difficult to find good situations to take pictures though. With work and other classes and assignments, it was difficult to find events that I could schedule in for this assignment as well. However, it made me more aware of what was happening around me on the daily for me to pull out my phone to take a shot. I believe that in a more professional setting as a photojournalist for a job, it would be much easier to complete photojournalist images due to the dedication of my time to that assignment due to the fact that it would be my one and only job. Though, this assignment was still a good experience to understand a photojournalist’s job.
